Cutting down on spam through your website

Spam can be very annoying for website owners, and at times you may find that you get more spam than real enquiries. Having an inbox full of spam enquiries can make it hard to keep track of whats going on and often means you will miss some important emails.

If you have a contact form or a number of forms on your site then it is important to set up some sort of Captcha code on them. Often if you are using a content management system such as WordPress, you will find that the form plugins have a built in spam filter that you can use. You may find through, that this is not enough and doesn’t stop the majority of spam landing in your inbox. Google have a reCaptcha service that is free to use. You can log in to your Google account and add any domains that you want to register for the service. Once you have registered you will be given some HTML code, site key code and secret key. This is unique to your website. Depending on which plugin you use, you may have to enter this in the code of the site or in to boxes within the settings of the plugin.

Whenever you add a new Captcha to your website be certain to check it thoroughly be sending test enquiries and checking that the end recipient is receiving them.
