Advertising for the self employed

If you run a self employed business and want to know how to effectively marketing your products or services then you need to think about why people would want to use you. Think about the products and / or services you sell and why people want them, what are the benefits they get from using them or what advantage to they offer? Once you know this you can then work out how to start to market this to your potential customers. People don’t actually buy in to a product or service they buy in to the benefits it can give them. For example, if you sell shampoo, they do not buy shampoo they buy in to the benefits that you say it will give them such as stronger, glossy hair etc.

If your products or services have many advantages then you should think about the three main ones and target these in your advertising. If you try and target too many people will not take them seriously and may actually end up not really taking in any of the advantages you have stated.

People have grown accustomed to the overstatements and exaggerations in marketing and therefore are a little reluctant to believe everything they read. Yu need to make sure that your statements are factual, state the product and the benefit in a believable way. Even showing examples such as before and after pictures can be a great way to instil enough confidence in your potential customers to encourage them to buy from you.
